The number of breeders, stud masters, trainers, grooms, riders, owners, association members and horse lovers have increased greatly in recent years. Everyone wants to improve the health and beauty of their horses. They are particularly concerned about equine diseases and health problems caused by bacterial, fungal and viral manifestation, and how to treat these complications and other skin irritations, quickly, safely and effectively.
Although seasonal, girth itch, summer itch, and fly bites can reach epidemic proportions and cause summer sores. Horses react to these irritations of the skin by rubbing, biting, and scratching, which often results in unsightly hair loss in areas of the ears, mane, withers, and tail. Longstanding itching, rubbing, and biting leads to thickened, wrinkled and discolored skin with hair rubbed off on the side of wither or girth. This may leave skin raw with bleeding sores that vary in size and are slow to heal.
Ringworm, a highly contagious fungal infection, can appear as hairless, scaly, or encrusted areas, grayish in color, and usually found on the face, ears, neck, and tail root. Other areas include the back, flank, croup and girth area. Horses infected with ringworm should be isolated and treated aggressively. This could become a significant expense for the owner.
Papilla warts, commonly known as horse warts, are caused by a viral infection and are often removed by pinching or cutting the wart. This causes scarring and decreases the appearance and value of the horse.
Saddle sores, resulting from extensive pressure and friction, develop into damaging skin infections with scarring if not treated. Stables with riding horses routinely battle this problem.
Even the best and the most expensive treatments have failed to alleviate horses of these bothersome conditions. Other anti-microbial treatments are often dangerous and ineffective. As you can see, equine skin irritations and infections represent a costly challenge to the horse community.
Fortunately, when it comes to summer itch, girth itch, saddle sores, ringworm, papilla warts, insect bites, parasitic irritations and bacterial, fungal and viral infections, MedEquine®, a topical anti-microbial treatment, is meeting that challenge and alleviating concerns for safety.
