Synopsis Of Clinical Bacterial Dermatitis Study
MedEquine
Conducted At Woodbine Race Track

In the summer of 2005, two highly regarded equine veterinarians, Darryl B. Bonder, D.V.M. and John A. Chris, D.V.M., conducted independent open-label studies at Woodbine Race Track located in Rexdale, Ontario to determine the effect of MedEquine® on unsightly skin conditions due to bacterial and fungal dermatitis. At the time of selection, these particular Thoroughbred racehorses had already been unsuccessfully treated with another commercial veterinary skin product.

These horses manifested the typical blemishes associated with skin conditions of horses that are housed in a stable setting in which there is a mutual sharing of tack and/or grooming equipment. Typically, the multiple, scabbing lesions were located either on the head, the neck, the chest and girth region, between the legs or on the rump.

Treatment consisted of the topical application of MedEquine® twice daily for a period of 30 days. Resolution of the lesions was apparent within 14 days, and was complete within 30 days. No adverse side effects occurred in any of the animals at any time, and there was no recurrence of lesions following the 30-day treatment. The active ingredient in MedEquine® is stannous fluoride.

Although skin conditions of horses are rarely a life threatening issue, they certainly do have a significant economic impact. Besides being unsightly, equine skin infections are often itchy and will often affect appetite and thereby reduce active periods of both training and competition.

A larger MedEquine® study was conducted simultaneously at the College of Veterinary Medicine located at the University of Florida in Gainesville ( see "Clinical Studies" of this website ). Similar results of efficacy were duplicated in this scientific, double blinded, placebo study. The results of this study will soon be published in a professional veterinary journal for which reprints will be made available.

You will find 'before & after' photographs that have been extracted from both the Woodbine & Gainesville Studies in "Photographs" section of this website.. These photographs graphically demonstrate the high level of efficacy of MedEquine® on bacterial and fungal dermatitis that commonly affect the hair coats of horses.

The above Woodbine Study was supervised and monitored by the noted equine practitioner, Harley L. Waxer, D.V.M.
